Social and Emotional Learning (SEL) helps children learn important life skills like:

  • understanding and managing their emotions
  • making good choices
  • handling stress
  • setting goals
  • building healthy relationships.

We can support difficulties at home as well as school such as peer or sibling relationships, bereavement, moving house or a parental separation.

SEL teaches them how to stay calm, make positive choices, and supports their mental wellbeing.

Team Teach

KidSafe

Our staff use Team Teach strategies to support positive behaviour and safely manage challenges.

We focus on de-escalation, understanding behaviour triggers, and recognising behaviour as communication.

We are proud to be a KidSafe School.
This is programme runs across the whole school during class time and:

  • teaches children how to stay safe and look after their mental health.
  • helps them speak up if something is wrong
  • helps children understand how to deal with difficult situations
  • supports with resolving peer conflicts and disagreements.

Drawing and Talking Therapy

The Thrive Approach

  • A gentle way for children to express feelings through drawing.
  • Helps children deal with emotional pain or trauma at their own pace.
  • 1:1 sessions for a fixed number of weeks.
  • Helps children understand and manage their feelings.
  • Identifies areas where a child may need extra help and provides support through action plans and activities.
  • Aims to catch problems early and build strong emotional skills.

Welcome to Branthwaite Academy – formerly known as Cumbria Academy for Autism.

Together with pupils, parents, staff, and community representatives, we have chosen a new name that we hope truly reflects our purpose, vision, and mission.

Branthwaite Academy continues to uphold key values such as inclusivity, innovation, honesty, high expectations, purpose, and potential.

The new brand aligns closely with our purpose: to transform the lives of autistic children, young people, and their families, and reflects our commitment to fostering a more inclusive and supportive environment for all students.
